Flagstaff, AZ Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Flagstaff Zoning Code § 10-50.50.040, General Fencing and Screening Standards, splits fence-material rules into subsections F and G. Subsection F allows chain-link fencing in every zone except the CB (Community Business) zone, where it is barred outright apart from temporary construction fencing, but subsection F.1 narrows that further for homes: in a residential zone only vinyl-coated chain link is permitted, so a bare galvanized chain-link fence cannot go up around a Flagstaff house.

Subsection G, Use of Barbed Wire, is stricter still. Plain barbed wire fencing is allowed only in the RR (Rural Residential), PF (Public Facility) and PLF/OS (Public Lands and Forest/Open Space) zones, or as a security topper on a minimum six-foot screen around high-voltage transformers and similarly hazardous utility equipment, provided the wire itself does not extend past the property line and the screen is fronted by evergreen planting at least 5 feet tall every 10 feet on center. In an industrial zone, barbed wire can top a fence that is already at least 6 feet tall, but the combined height still cannot exceed the maximum set in the fence height table, and no part of the wire may cross the property boundary. Concertina wire, razor wire and electric fencing get no such exceptions: subsection G.4 bans all three outright in every zone in the city, residential, commercial or industrial alike.
