Tamarac, FL Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Tamarac's Land Development Code makes a building permit a precondition for any fence or wall within the city's jurisdiction: §10-4.8(B)(1)(g) states that none may be erected or installed unless the design and structurally sound materials have first been approved, and a permit issued, by the city's building department. That permit review sits alongside the code's other general fence standards, including the required construction materials (wood, rock, stone, stuccoed masonry, pierced masonry, ornamental metal, vinyl-coated chain link, or PVC), the ban on electrified fencing, and the sight-distance check the City Engineer performs at roadway intersections under §10-4.4(D)(6).

A permit applicant in a residential district must also show the fence meets the height limits set for that location: six feet along most side and rear lines, eight feet where the rear line abuts nonresidential property, and none inside the required front setback. Multi-family developments seeking a decorative fence or wall within the front setback likewise need the permit to confirm the six-foot cap and the ban on chain link, PVC, or wood for that decorative use. Because the permit requirement is embedded in the general standards applicable to all districts, it reaches temporary and construction chain link fencing too, except where the code's narrow exemption for that use applies to the material rule, not the permit rule itself.
