Tamarac, FL Landscaping Rules: Tree Removal & Heritage Trees (2026)

Section 10-4.4(D)(2) of the Land Development Code makes it unlawful to remove any tree without first obtaining a tree removal license from the Community Development Department. Section 10-4.4(F)(1)(a) repeats the licensing requirement, and section 10-4.4(F)(1)(b) requires anyone who removes a tree or damages a Natural Forest Community in violation of the Code to mitigate the impact, typically by replacing the tree. Applicants submit a City form with the required fee, a site map, a start date and duration for the work, a description or drawing of the work, and, for undeveloped or redeveloping property, a certified tree survey under section 10-4.4(F)(2).

The Department may approve a license if the tree blocks development that cannot be sited elsewhere, is in poor condition, obstructs sight visibility, damages improvements, or is listed on the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council's invasive list, among the criteria in section 10-4.4(F)(3)(c). Section 10-4.4(F)(3)(c)(ii) exempts owner-occupied single-family and duplex lots of one acre or less from the licensing requirement, except for previously preserved, relocated, or replaced trees; historical or specimen trees; and trees whose removal would drop the lot below the minimum tree count in Table 10-4.6. No Improvement Permit issues without an approved license, and removal, replacement, or relocation must happen before a certificate of occupancy.
