Tamarac, FL Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

Tamarac's nuisance-abatement provisions in Chapter 9, Division 5 regulate how residents may store yard waste on their property, and composting is one of the uses the Code expressly allows. Section 9-76 defines a compost bin as a container designed to let nonliving plant material decompose for use as fertilizer, and requires it be built of wire, wood lattice or other material that lets air filter through the structure; the same definition caps every compost bin at 64 square feet of area and 5 feet of height.

Section 9-78(a) requires every property owner, agent, custodian, lessee or occupant to reasonably regulate and control accumulations of trash, junk, debris and plant material on the property and on the adjoining right-of-way, and § 9-78(b) then lists the uses that satisfy that duty rather than violate it: storing trash and plant material in code-compliant garbage cans, storing nonliving plant material in compost bins except that no property may have more than two compost bins, and keeping firewood piled, stacked, bundled or corded with the surrounding ground kept clear of excessive growth.

A third compost bin, or a bin larger than 64 square feet or taller than 5 feet, falls outside the permitted use and can be treated as an accumulation of trash, junk or debris under the broader nuisance definition in § 9-77. Enforcement follows the notice-and-abatement process in § 9-82: a code enforcement officer serves a notice of violation giving the owner or occupant ten calendar days to correct the condition before the city can abate it at the owner's expense.
