Kenner, LA Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Kenner Code of Ordinances § 8-1(b) makes it unlawful for any person to kindle or maintain a bonfire, leaf fire, rubbish fire, trash fire, or waste fire, or to authorize one, anywhere in the city, and subsection (a) separately bars burning waste materials or rubbish generated by construction, renovation, remodeling, or demolition work. Subsection (c) carves out a narrow exception for burning trees, brush, grass, and other vegetation that results from land being cleared. That exception only applies if the burn site sits at least 1,000 feet from any dwelling or adjoining property, with safeguards approved by the Kenner fire chief to keep the fire from spreading within 150 feet of a structure or property line; burning is limited to the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the material must burn inside a container approved by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality; and the person burning must first obtain a certificate of compliance from the Kenner Fire Department chief, paying a $35 fee for each estimated day of burning.

The burn must be constantly attended by a competent person with water or other approved extinguishing equipment on hand, and the certificate must be available for inspection at the burn site. If no certificate was issued or it cannot be produced, subsection (c)(8) lets the fire chief or a representative enter the property, extinguish the fire, and take steps to prevent it from being rekindled. Subsection (d) makes interfering with that entry a distinct, additional violation. Subsection (e) sets the overall penalty at a fine of up to $500, imprisonment of up to 60 days, or both.
