Boca Raton, FL Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 7-43 of the Boca Raton Code of Ordinances governs every LPG container installed, used, stored, handled, or transported in the city, requiring compliance with NFPA 58 and a permit from the fire rescue services department before installation. The department controls the process end to end: containers cannot be filled before the fire rescue services department approves them, and underground containers must be visually inspected by the department before the excavation is backfilled. The setback rule is explicit: no part of an LPG tank can sit closer than 10 feet to the nearest adjoining property line, though the installation must still meet every other NFPA 58 requirement and receive department approval regardless of distance.

Containers placed within 10 feet of a public vehicular thoroughfare or a designated parking spot, or installed under a driveway or parking area, need extra protection: a shroud that lets the container sit at least 18 inches below grade, plus a protective dome or cover engineered to shield the tank and valve assembly and support the weight of a parked or moving vehicle. Because the permit requirement in Section 7-35(3)(d) lists "liquid petroleum or natural gas storage" among the fire rescue services department's permitted installations, a homeowner or contractor adding a propane tank for a generator, pool heater, or outdoor kitchen has to clear both the Section 7-43 siting rules and the Section 7-35 permit process before the tank goes in the ground.
