Boca Raton limits single-family and duplex driveways to a 12-to-24-foot width and caps most lots at two driveways per street. City Code Sec. 23-189 also requires 20 feet of separation between two driveways on the same lot and a 25-foot buffer from any street or alley intersection, measured along the property line.

Sec. 23-189. - Single-family and duplex residential driveways. (1)Number of driveways and spacing. For each single-family and duplex residential plot there shall be no more than 2 driveways providing access to any 1 street, and there shall be a minimum separation of 20 feet between the edges of 2 driveways on the same plot measured along the property line; however, in the case of corner plots or other plots fronting on more than 1 street, or plots with more than 200 linear feet of frontage along a single street, no more than 3 driveways shall be permitted for any plot.(2)Width of driveways. The minimum width of any driveway shall be 12 feet, and the maximum width of any driveway shall be 24 feet measured along the property line. Full Breakdown

Sec. 23-189 governs driveways for single-family and duplex residential plots specifically, leaving multifamily and commercial driveways to the separate standards in Sec. 23-190. A plot gets no more than 2 driveways onto the same street, rising to 3 for corner lots, lots fronting more than one street, or lots with over 200 linear feet of frontage along a single street, and any 2 driveways on the same plot must be spaced at least 20 feet apart at the property line. Width is bounded on both ends: a driveway cannot be narrower than 12 feet or wider than 24 feet measured at the property line, though it can flare out up to 20 additional feet at the street pavement edge.

Driveways must also sit at least 25 feet from the corner of an intersecting street or alley, measured from the property line's corner to the driveway's nearer edge. Sec. 23-188's general standards back this up on materials: driveway areas must be asphaltic concrete, concrete, or an approved equal on a properly compacted base, and loose material like slag, rock or pea rock is barred outright, so a homeowner cannot convert a front yard to gravel parking to dodge the paving requirement. An owner who needs an exception, for a wider or unusually placed driveway, can request a technical deviation under Sec.

23-189(4), but it requires a certified traffic engineering study and planning and zoning board approval, and the deviation automatically expires after 18 months if unused.

Violations & Fines

Installing a driveway wider or narrower than the 12-to-24-foot range, adding more driveways than a plot's frontage allows, or paving with loose material such as gravel or slag instead of asphalt or concrete, is a building and land development code violation subject to Sec. 1-16's general penalty: up to a $500.00 fine, up to 60 days in jail, or both, with each day the nonconforming driveway remains counted as a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide can my driveway be in Boca Raton?
Between 12 and 24 feet, measured along the property line, under Sec. 23-189(2). It can widen by up to 20 more feet at the street pavement edge, but the property-line measurement is what has to fall inside that 12-to-24-foot band.
Can I have a gravel driveway or parking pad?
No. Sec. 23-188 requires all driveway areas to be asphaltic concrete, concrete, or an approved equal on a compacted base, and specifically bars slag, rock, pea rock or other loose material anywhere in the public right-of-way portion of the driveway.
How many driveways can a single-family lot have?
Normally 2 driveways onto the same street, per Sec. 23-189(1). Corner lots, lots fronting more than one street, or lots with more than 200 linear feet of frontage on a single street can have up to 3, but any two driveways on the same lot must still be at least 20 feet apart.
