Sec. 23-189 governs driveways for single-family and duplex residential plots specifically, leaving multifamily and commercial driveways to the separate standards in Sec. 23-190. A plot gets no more than 2 driveways onto the same street, rising to 3 for corner lots, lots fronting more than one street, or lots with over 200 linear feet of frontage along a single street, and any 2 driveways on the same plot must be spaced at least 20 feet apart at the property line. Width is bounded on both ends: a driveway cannot be narrower than 12 feet or wider than 24 feet measured at the property line, though it can flare out up to 20 additional feet at the street pavement edge.

Driveways must also sit at least 25 feet from the corner of an intersecting street or alley, measured from the property line's corner to the driveway's nearer edge. Sec. 23-188's general standards back this up on materials: driveway areas must be asphaltic concrete, concrete, or an approved equal on a properly compacted base, and loose material like slag, rock or pea rock is barred outright, so a homeowner cannot convert a front yard to gravel parking to dodge the paving requirement. An owner who needs an exception, for a wider or unusually placed driveway, can request a technical deviation under Sec.

23-189(4), but it requires a certified traffic engineering study and planning and zoning board approval, and the deviation automatically expires after 18 months if unused.
