Lower Merion, PA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 78-17 of the Township Code requires that bulk storage of liquefied petroleum gases comply with the International Fire Code, the standard the Board of Commissioners adopted under Section 78-12 as the Township's Fire Prevention Code. Section 78-22 similarly requires all use of liquefied petroleum gas to comply with the International Fire Code and NFPA Standard No. 58 for LP-gas storage and handling. For multifamily buildings specifically, Section 78-29.1.B bans storing charcoal, charcoal lighter fluid or propane inside any multifamily dwelling in Lower Merion Township at all, a stricter rule than the general bulk-storage compliance standard because it forbids indoor propane storage outright rather than setting technical limits.

The Fire Marshal administers these standards, and the same chapter's fire watch and inspection authority (Sections 78-12 through 78-18) gives the Fire Marshal power to require corrective action when storage is found noncompliant. Residents of single-family homes are not covered by the multifamily storage ban, but bulk storage anywhere in the Township, residential or otherwise, still must meet International Fire Code and NFPA 58 handling requirements.
