Mount Prospect, IL Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 24.109, Aboveground Storage Tanks, sits in Article I of Chapter 24, the Fire Prevention Code of the Village of Mount Prospect. Its subsection A.3 is the propane rule: aboveground tanks containing liquefied petroleum gas in quantities in excess of one hundred (100) pounds shall be prohibited. The one exception is a temporary installation approved by the Fire Chief. The Village Code does not build a permit path for a permanent tank above that weight, so the Fire Chief's approval of a temporary installation is the only door the text opens.

Subsection A.1 adds a commercial ban. The commercial sale and dispensing of flammable liquids and liquefied petroleum gases from aboveground storage tanks is prohibited in the Village. Subsection A also makes it unlawful to construct, install or enlarge any tank, pump or piping equipment for the storage or handling of flammable, combustible or volatile liquids without first obtaining a permit from the bureau of fire prevention, with a drawing to scale showing the location and manufacturer cut sheets.

Section 24.108 covers the largest end of the scale. It defines a bulk plant or terminal to include liquefied petroleum gas storage of 2,000 gallons water capacity or more, and it prohibits new bulk plants for flammable or combustible liquids. Section 24.109 A.4 repeats that prohibition.

The tank distance and capacity limits printed in subsection A.1 apply to flammable liquid storage tanks, where individual capacity is capped at 1,000 gallons and total aboveground storage at 2,000 gallons. Those figures are written for flammable liquids, not for LP gas, so the 100 pound line remains the propane number. The Village adopted the International Fire Code, 2021 in its entirety and as amended by section 24.102, and the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire Department enforces it under the Fire Chief as Fire Official.
