Naperville adopts the 2018 International Building Code and International Residential Code with local amendments requiring smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in all residential dwellings. Detectors are required in every bedroom and on each level of the home.
Naperville follows the 2018 International Building Code and International Residential Code as adopted under Title 5, Chapter 1 (Building Codes) with local amendments. Smoke alarms are required in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement. Carbon monoxide detectors are required per Illinois state law (430 ILCS 135) near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. New construction and remodeling projects must install interconnected, hardwired smoke detectors with battery backup. Existing homes must have functioning smoke and CO alarms as required by the International Property Maintenance Code. The Naperville Fire Department conducts inspections for new construction and remodeling permits.
Failure to maintain functioning smoke and CO detectors is a property maintenance code violation. Fines apply under the general penalty schedule. Landlords must ensure rental units comply at all times.
