Ogden, UT Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Ogden does not write its own free-standing smoke alarm ordinance; instead section 16-2-2 of the technical codes chapter adopts the International Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association standards, along with the International Building, Residential and Existing Building codes, as the rules, regulations and standards for the construction, occupancy, alteration, remodeling and repair of all structures and buildings in the city, folding those model codes into the State Construction Code and State Fire Code defined by Utah Code Annotated sections 15A-1-204 and 15A-1-403. Enforcement of the fire code falls to the Ogden Fire Department; section 16-2-1 defines the Department of Fire Prevention as the Fire Prevention Division established under section 2-4-17C, and names the fire chief, or a designated representative, as the Code Official for anything referencing the International Fire Code.

Ogden separately requires operable carbon monoxide detectors in existing residential occupancies under title 12, chapter 17, a distinct ordinance from the adopted fire code's smoke alarm provisions, and its own multifamily rehabilitation and condominium conversion standards specifically require smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors installed in each dwelling unit in accordance with the technical codes before those projects get final approval. A resident who believes a rental unit lacks a working smoke alarm required by the adopted fire and building codes can request an inspection through Building Services or the fire marshal's office; a disputed citation or code interpretation goes to the board of building and fire code appeals for a one hundred dollar filing fee under section 16-1-7.
