Smoke alarms are required in every Redondo Beach residence under the adopted California Fire Code and state law β in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. New construction needs hard-wired units with battery backup; existing homes may use 10-year sealed lithium alarms.
Redondo Beach enforces statewide smoke-alarm rules through the 2022 California Fire Code adopted as the Redondo Beach Fire Code (RBMC Title 3, Chapter 4, Article 1, Β§ 3-4.101) and the Health & Safety Code. The City's Fire FAQ states the Fire Code requires alarms in all residences β in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. New construction (or where permits are pulled) must use hard-wired alarms with battery backup; existing homes may use approved 10-year sealed lithium-battery alarms, mirroring Health & Safety Code 13113.7. Carbon-monoxide alarms are required under Health & Safety Code 17926 where a home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage. In rentals the owner installs and maintains the alarms.
Failure to provide required smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms violates the California Fire Code (RBMC 3-4.101) and state law. Under Health & Safety Code 13113.7, violations can carry a civil penalty (up to $200); rental failures expose owners to habitability claims.
