Hoboken, NJ Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Sidewalk & Mobile Vending (2026)

Section 147-23, governing Article IV's nonmotorized mobile retail food vendors, sets the location rules for pushcarts and food carts operating on Hoboken sidewalks. A vendor may not remain at the same spot on any sidewalk or street for more than 30 minutes without transacting a sale; once that period expires, the vendor must relocate at least 30 feet away, and the 30-minute clock resets immediately after each sale. A vendor who has moved off a spot may not return to it, or to any point within 30 feet of it, for at least two hours, preventing carts from simply circling back to a favored corner.

Subsection C requires a minimum 10-foot clearance from any crosswalk, and Subsection D requires the same 10-foot clearance from any fire hydrant, protecting sight lines and emergency access. Subsection F confines all nonmotorized vending to the sidewalk itself; the article expressly states that vending shall not take place on the street. Subsection G bars placing a cart anywhere that would narrow the remaining clear sidewalk width below five feet, preserving pedestrian passage. Vehicles used to tow or transport the vending unit still must comply with the City's ordinary parking rules under Subsection H.

These location standards apply on top of, not instead of, the licensing and health-certificate requirements of Chapter 147, and enforcement runs through the Hoboken Police Department, Parking Enforcement officers and the Health Officer named in § 147-7 and § 147-20.
