Lenexa, KS Home Business: Customer Traffic Restrictions (2026)

Section 4-1-B-24-F-8 of the Lenexa City Code treats a home occupation as an accessory use by the occupant of a dwelling unit, and paragraphs f through k set the traffic rules. Business-related vehicular and pedestrian visits are allowed only between 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M. The activity cannot generate more than 6 round-trip vehicular trips per day. No parking in the public right of way can result from the business, and no separate street-side entrance for the exclusive use of the home occupation is permitted. The one exception to the parking rule is the occasional business gathering: recitals or demonstrations are allowed if they happen inside the permitted hours and do not occur more than twelve times per year.

The traffic rules sit alongside other limits in the same paragraph. Only 1 person besides members of the family living in the home can work at the residence, no more than 25 percent of the total floor area of the dwelling (garage and basement space included) can be used, and the exterior cannot change in a way that shows the business is there. A person applying for a home occupation business license at a rental property must submit written consent signed by the owner. Use of a dwelling as a hotel or motel is not allowed as a home occupation, and the standards do not apply to a day care as defined in Section 4-3-C-2. Every home occupation needs a business license, and the Community Development Director has the right to place stipulations and restrictions on the approval so the business stays consistent with the residential intent of the section.
