Section 4-1-B-24-F-8 of the Lenexa Unified Development Code treats a home occupation as an accessory use by the occupants of a dwelling in which goods are produced or traded, or services rendered, as an economic enterprise. Nine standards apply beyond the license. No more than 1 other person in addition to family members residing on the premises can work in the home occupation. It can use no more than 25 percent of the total floor area, including garage and basement space, and multiple home occupations share that combined 25 percent.

There can be no change in the exterior appearance of the dwelling or other visible evidence of the business, and no separate street-side entrance for its exclusive use. Business visits can occur only between 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M., traffic is capped at 6 round-trip vehicular trips per day, and no parking in the public right of way can result except for occasional gatherings. Occasional group gatherings such as recitals or demonstrations are allowed, no more than twelve times per year, within the permitted hours.

Noise, dust, heat, smoke, odor, vibration, interference, glare or light beyond levels normally associated with single-family dwellings is barred, and storing combustible, toxic or hazardous substances is prohibited unless the City approves in writing. Using a dwelling as a hotel or motel cannot be a home occupation, and day care follows separate standards. A rental tenant must submit written consent signed by the owner. The business license is required, and the Community Development Director can place stipulations and restrictions on the approval. One non-illuminated facade sign of no more than 1 square foot is allowed under Section 4-1-E-4-P.
