Lenexa, KS Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 4-1-E-4-P of the Lenexa City Code sets the only sign a home business is given, and it is small: one non-illuminated facade sign not more than 1 square foot in area, mounted on or adjacent to an entrance to the building, indicating a permitted home occupation to those at or approaching the door. The color must be compatible with the house color. Because the sign is listed in Section 4-1-E-4, it is exempt from permit requirements but must conform to every other requirement of Article 4-1-E, and Section 4-1-E-8 confirms that erecting any sign described in Section 4-1-E-4 needs no sign permit.

The small sign ties to the home occupation standards in Section 4-1-B-24 (subsection F8). The appearance rule there says there shall be no change in the exterior appearance of the dwelling unit or other visible evidence of the conduct of the home occupation, and a footnote points to the Home Occupation Signs section, printing the cross-reference as Section 4-1-E-4-V. The same standards allow no more than 1 other person besides family members residing on the premises, cap the business at 25 percent of the total floor area including garage and basement space, limit business-related vehicular and pedestrian visits to 6:00 A.M. through 9:00 P.M., and cap traffic at 6 round-trip vehicular trips per day.

A business license is required for every home occupation, and the Community Development Director can place stipulations and restrictions on the approval. The fee schedule in Section 2-12-A-1 lists Home Occupations that do not fall under any other category at $36.00. Because Section 4-1-E-3 prohibits any sign not specifically permitted, along with portable signs, snipe signs on trees, poles and benches, and off-site signs, a home business cannot add a lit sign, a second sign or a lawn sign beyond the single 1 square foot facade sign.
