Bossier City, LA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 8.2.3 of the Unified Development Code lists commercial signs allowed without a permit in specific districts, and paragraph A governs home-based businesses: in all residential districts, one business sign of no more than 4 square feet in area, on each side, and only one sign per residence, is exempt from the Sign Location Permit otherwise required by Section 8.2.1. The catch is eligibility: the residence must already hold a Certificate of Occupancy for a home occupation before the sign qualifies for this no-permit allowance.

This dovetails with the home occupation standards in Section 6.6.4.E, which bar any advertising of a home-based business on the site except the small name-plate sign permitted under Section 8.2.3.A. Section 8.2.5 reinforces the limit by prohibiting all other commercial advertising signs in residential districts, carving out only the signs already allowed under Sections 8.2.2 and 8.2.3.A. The Code defines a Sign, Home Business in Article 18 as a sign in a residential district carrying no commercial message beyond advertising goods or services legally offered on the premises.

A sign that exceeds 4 square feet, that is a second sign on the same lot, or that sits at a home lacking a home occupation Certificate of Occupancy loses the exemption and needs a Sign Location Permit, or is unlawful outright. The Metropolitan Planning Commission's Executive Director enforces these limits and, under Section 17.5, may impound a noncompliant sign and charge a $50 recovery fee before releasing it back to the owner.
