Bossier City, LA Home Business: Zoning & Home Occupation Permits (2026)

Section 6.6.4 of the Unified Development Code lists nine conditions a home occupation must meet to qualify as a lawful accessory use in any Bossier City dwelling. The business must be conducted entirely inside the home, or comply fully with the Code if any activity happens away from the dwelling, and it cannot use more than 25 percent of the floor area. Only residents of the home may work the business, plus a maximum of one non-resident employee. The home's exterior cannot be altered to look non-residential, and the operation cannot disrupt the neighborhood's residential character.

On-site advertising is barred except for the small name-plate sign allowed under Section 8.2.3.A, and the business cannot generate noise, vibration, smoke, dust, odor, heat, glare, or traffic and parking problems, or bring more than 10 customers a day to the dwelling. All activity must stay indoors within the residence itself; work in a detached accessory building, such as an outdoor workshop, is prohibited unless the owner secures a Special Exception Use under Section 3.3.3 and still meets every one of the standards above. The Metropolitan Planning Commission's Executive Director enforces these limits, and Article 17 makes any UDC violation a misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $500 or 30 days in jail, with each day of continued violation counted as a separate offense.
