Hudson, NH Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 334-67 limits every home occupation in Hudson to no more than one exterior sign, a much tighter allowance than the ordinary business sign rules in §§ 334-63 and 334-64 give a commercial building. That single sign cannot exceed three square feet in area under subsection A, and if it is a freestanding pole or ground sign it cannot rise more than eight feet under subsection B. Subsection C adds a narrow second-sign allowance: if the home occupation actually operates out of an accessory structure, such as a detached garage, that sits more than 100 feet back from the nearest public right-of-way, the operator may add a second sign of up to two square feet attached to that accessory structure.

Subsection D requires any sign not attached to a building, meaning a freestanding sign in the yard, to be set back at least 15 feet from the right-of-way. Because a home occupation in Hudson already needs a Zoning Board of Adjustment special exception under § 334-24, and § 334-24H bars any exterior display or other exterior indication of the home occupation beyond the sign permitted here, the sign is effectively the only outward marker a home-based business in Hudson is allowed to show the street.

The sign still needs the permit that § 334-58A requires of signs generally, issued by the Building Inspector and approved by the Zoning Administrator, since home-occupation signs are not on the no-permit list in § 334-58B.
