Johns Creek Zoning Ordinance Sec. 4.12.C prohibits any sign identifying a home occupation. There may also be no storage, display, or activity associated with the home occupation visible outside the structure. Home-based businesses must remain visually indistinguishable from a residence.
Under Section 4.12.C of the Johns Creek Zoning Ordinance, "there shall be no signs identifying the home occupation, nor shall there be any storage, display or activity associated with the home occupation visible outside the structure." This is a flat prohibition - no nameplate, window sign, yard sign, or other exterior signage advertising the home business is permitted, regardless of size. The rule works together with other Sec. 4.12 limits designed to keep the residential character intact: the business is confined to the smaller of 25% or 750 square feet of the dwelling's gross floor area (A), accessory buildings may not be used (B), and the use may not generate offensive traffic, sound, smell, vibration, light, or dust (F) or cause a nuisance (P). Because outdoor storage, display, and activity tied to the home occupation are also barred, equipment and materials must be kept inside. This sign restriction is part of the city's own zoning code; it is separate from the general sign regulations that apply to commercial properties. There is no exception in Sec. 4.12 for a small directional or identification sign, so home-based operators should rely on online listings, business cards, and by-appointment arrangements rather than exterior signage.
Posting a home-occupation sign or maintaining visible outdoor storage, display, or activity is a zoning violation under Sec. 4.12.C and can prompt a code-compliance correction notice and removal order.
