Woodland, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Woodland Municipal Code § 17.84.200(D)(17) states flatly that signs associated with home occupations are prohibited, cross-referencing Chapter 17.72, Signs, for the City's general sign standards that would otherwise apply to a commercial use. That ban does not stand alone: subsection (D)(3) requires the home occupation to have no outward appearance at all, and subsection (D)(6) bars any external alteration to the dwelling or accessory structure, including a garage conversion, that would signal a business is being run there. Together, the three provisions mean a Woodland home business cannot post a placard, a yard sign, a window sign, or an illuminated sign of any kind, no matter how small.

The City draws a deliberate line here: live/work units under a separate section, § 17.84.230(C)(5), are allowed a small two-square-foot sign affixed to a door or wall, which shows the home occupation sign ban is a considered choice rather than an oversight for that specific accessory use category. The one advertising outlet left open to a home occupation is a single vehicle: § 17.84.200(D)(15) allows no more than one vehicle advertising the business to be used in connection with it, but that is a vehicle rule, not a sign at the property.
