Cook County Zoning Ordinance (Ord. 01-O-30) defines home occupations as businesses practiced by a resident that are incidental and secondary to residential use. No fee is required for the home occupation affidavit filed with the Zoning Administrator.
The Cook County Zoning Ordinance (Ord. 01-O-30) permits home occupations in residential districts of unincorporated areas. A home occupation is defined as an occupation or profession practiced by a member of the family residing on the premises, which is clearly incidental and secondary to the residential use of the dwelling. The activity must not alter the residential character of the property. Homeowners must submit an affidavit to the Zoning Administrator to establish a home-based business, which can be sent by email. There is no fee required for this filing. Home occupations must comply with all zoning requirements including restrictions on signage, customer traffic, outdoor storage, and noise. The business must not generate excessive traffic or parking demands beyond what is normal for the neighborhood.
Home business violating zoning: $100–$1,000 fine per offense. Business activity that changes residential character may be ordered to cease.
