Skokie, IL Home Business: Zoning Restrictions (2026)

Skokie's zoning code permits home occupations in residential districts (R-1 through R-4 and multi-family zones) as an accessory use. The home occupation must be conducted entirely within the principal dwelling by residents of the household. The business activity may not occupy more than a limited portion of the dwelling's floor area. No noise, odor, vibration, smoke, dust, glare, or electrical interference beyond normal residential levels may be produced. No stock-in-trade may be sold on the premises. Exterior evidence including signs, outdoor storage, or display is prohibited. Customer and client visits that would generate traffic beyond normal residential levels are not permitted. Only members of the immediate family residing on the premises may be employed at the home. Deliveries must be limited to what is typical for a residential use. Certain uses such as auto repair, manufacturing, beauty shops serving multiple clients, and medical practices with patient visits are specifically prohibited as home occupations.
