Schaumburg allows home occupations in residential zoning districts subject to conditions in the Village's zoning ordinance. Home businesses must be clearly incidental to the residential use, may not alter the residential character of the property, and cannot generate customer traffic, outdoor storage, or signage. Certain business types such as auto repair, manufacturing, and retail sales from the premises are prohibited.
Schaumburg's zoning ordinance permits home occupations as an accessory use in residential districts (R-1 through R-4 and planned unit developments). The home occupation must be conducted entirely within the dwelling by residents of the household. No more than 25% of the total floor area of the dwelling may be devoted to the business. The business must not generate noise, odor, vibration, smoke, dust, or electrical interference beyond what is normal for a residential area. No stock-in-trade may be sold on the premises. Exterior evidence of the business including signage, outdoor storage, and commercial vehicles is prohibited. Customer, client, or patient visits are generally not permitted. Deliveries must be limited to what is typical for residential use. Employees who do not reside in the dwelling may not report to work at the home. The Village may require a business license for certain home occupation types. Professional services such as consulting, accounting, writing, and computer programming conducted entirely from home without client visits are typically the most straightforward to operate within these restrictions.
Operating a home business in violation of zoning conditions may result in a notice of violation from Code Enforcement at (847) 895-4500. Continued violations may lead to fines and an order to cease the business activity. Operating without a required business license carries separate penalties under the Village's licensing ordinance.
