Kenner, LA Hurricane Preparedness: Roof Standards (2026)

Ord. No. 9425, adopted January 4, 2007 and codified in the footnote to Chapter 5, adopted the State Uniform Construction Code for the City of Kenner, incorporating the 2006 editions of the International Building Code, International Existing Building Code and International Residential Code for One and Two Family Dwellings, each with certain administrative or trade chapters excluded because the city administers those functions itself. Within that adoption, Kenner specifically amended Chapter 3 of the International Residential Code, Section R301.2.1 (Design Criteria), the section that sets a home's structural design loads including wind, to add three named references: the American Concrete Institute's Guide to Concrete Masonry Residential Construction in High Wind Areas, the Institute for Business & Home Safety, and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes.

Because R301.2.1 governs the wind-load design that dictates how a roof structure, its coverings and its connections to the walls below must be built to resist hurricane-force wind, incorporating these high-wind references means new and altered one- and two-family homes in the City of Kenner must be designed and permitted against high-wind construction guidance, not just the base 2006 IRC wind provisions. The amendment applies through the same Chapter 5 building-permit process enforced by the Department of Inspections and Code Enforcement.
