Ramapo, NY Landscaping Rules: Tree Trimming (2026)

Section 376-51, the Zoning Law's front yard and setback exceptions article, sets Ramapo's only townwide tree-clearance rule, and it is tied to traffic sight lines rather than sidewalk overhang generally. Subsection C prohibits any shrubbery, hedge, other natural growth, fence or wall taller than three feet above the street center line's apex within the shaded areas the code labels 'Sketch A,' which sits at the intersection of two streets and is printed just before the Use Tables at the end of Chapter 376. The same sentence bars the limbs or foliage of any tree from obstructing vision or from being allowed to grow lower than eight feet above the ground wherever those limbs or foliage overhang or sit on land within that same Sketch A area.

The rule applies at every corner lot in the Town outside its incorporated villages, which set their own tree and landscaping standards; Suffern, Montebello, Airmont, Sloatsburg and Ramapo's other villages are separate jurisdictions with their own codes. Because the eight-foot clearance is measured at the sight triangle rather than along the whole street frontage, a homeowner whose tree overhangs the sidewalk mid-block is not reached by this particular section; Article V's exceptions chapter contains no general townwide sidewalk-overhang height standard beyond the corner sight-triangle rule.
