Broomfield, CO Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Section 8-08-040(a)(1) of the Broomfield Municipal Code makes it a violation for a property owner or lessee to let weeds and turf grow past eight inches anywhere in the City and County of Broomfield. A narrow exception applies only within an RR zoning district: on a lot larger than one acre, weeds may reach twelve inches, but only within fifteen feet of the property line. Turf itself is separately capped at eight inches under 8-08-040(A)(4), and noxious weeds on the state list (Canada thistle, diffuse knapweed, field bindweed) must be controlled regardless of any other exception.

The ordinance exempts flower and vegetable gardens, native or ornamental grasses not grown as turf, PUD land larger than twenty acres without an approved site plan, A-1 zoned land over one acre, city-owned open lands, conservation easements, golf course rough, fenced grazing land, and land farmed for crops. Enforcement runs through 8-08-050: a written notice by mail, email, posting, or personal service gives the owner seven days to cut the growth before the city removes it and assesses the cost, including a $75.00 inspection and administrative fee, as a lien against the lot.

If a second notice for the same lot is served within eighteen months, the cure period drops to three days. Under 8-08-060 and 8-08-080, an unpaid assessment carries interest, becomes a recorded lien with priority over everything but general taxes, and can be certified to the county treasurer with a ten-percent collection penalty added to the bill.
