Ridgewood defines weeds broadly and bans noxious species like poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and ragweed on private property abutting public ways.
Under Chapter 115, weeds include all grasses, annual plants, and vegetation other than trees, shrubs, or cultivated flowers and gardens. Noxious weeds, specifically poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and ragweed, are prohibited and must be removed by the owner or tenant. The ordinance is enforced through written notice from the Village, and owners have three days after notice to bring the property into compliance. Cultivated gardens and intentional plantings are excluded so long as they do not include the listed noxious species.
First offense $125, second $250, third or more $350, plus Village abatement costs assessed as a lien.
