Caldwell, ID Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Caldwell City Code section 09-17-19 sets the core riding rules for bicycles: a rider must stay astride a permanent, regular seat, may not ride more than two abreast on a roadway except on a path or part of a roadway set aside exclusively for bicycles, and must use a usable bicycle path whenever one has been provided next to a roadway rather than riding in the road. The Chief of Police, with City Council approval, is authorized under section 09-17-35 to establish bicycle paths within city limits and, in doing so, may prohibit parking on one side of a street and mark the path and any restricted parking area with signs.

Bicyclists riding on Caldwell streets must also obey official traffic-control signs and signals the same as a motor vehicle driver under section 09-17-17, including no-turn signs, unless a police officer directs otherwise, and every bicycle in use at night needs a front lamp visible 500 feet and a rear reflector visible from 50 to 300 feet under section 09-17-33. On the parking side, Caldwell's master improperly-parked-vehicles schedule, section 09-07-13(2)(U), separately makes it a ticketable offense to park any vehicle on a bike lane or bike path, alongside the general rule at section 09-17-29 that a bicycle itself may not be parked in a way that interferes with pedestrian traffic. Riding a bicycle on a sidewalk within the business district is also unlawful under section 09-17-31.
