Sandy, UT Mobility & Curb Rules: E-Bike Classes (2026)

Sandy City Code § 10-9-3 defines an electric assisted bicycle (e-Bike) as a bicycle with a motor rated at no more than 750 watts, fully operable pedals with permanently affixed cranks, and full rideability without the motor, falling into one of four categories set by State law: class 1, class 2, class 3, or programmable electric assisted bicycle. Riding rules in § 10-9-4 apply to all e-bike classes together with e-scooters: riders must use bikeways or multi-use trails where they exist; if none exist, riders may use a street shoulder outside the striped travel lane, or the street itself while staying right; e-bikes cannot enter vehicular travel lanes on streets posted above 35 mph; and e-bikes are flatly prohibited on sidewalks.

In bikeways and on trails, e-bikes must yield to bicycles, and they must yield to pedestrians under all circumstances and follow pedestrian rules in crosswalks. The one class-specific age restriction in the chapter singles out the fastest class: a person under 16 years old may not operate a class 3 e-bike, while anyone under 14 needs direct parental or guardian supervision to run any e-bike's motor on public property, and no one under 8 may engage an e-bike's motor on public property at all. At night, every e-bike needs a forward white lamp and rear red lamp visible 500 feet, plus reflective material or a side-visible lamp, and a working bell or horn (no sirens or whistles). § 41-6a-502.
