Sandy, UT Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Sandy City Code § 14-10-9 prohibits any motor vehicle from being driven within or through, or parked or stopped within, a marked bicycle lane, with one narrow exception: a vehicle may briefly cross the lane to turn into an intersection, street, alley, driveway, or other parking area. A driver making that turn must yield the right-of-way to every bicycle in the lane close enough to constitute an immediate hazard, and the section separately bars using a bicycle lane as a dedicated turning lane, meaning a driver cannot merge into the lane early and travel along it before turning.

On streets that have no marked bicycle lane, the same section gives bicycle operators the identical rights, duties, and responsibilities as motor vehicle operators, so a cyclist riding the traffic lane on such a street has the same right to the road as a car. The rule dates to the Traffic Code's original § 269 and sits in Chapter 14-10, Stops Required, alongside Sandy's other right-of-way rules for medians, animals in vehicles, and vehicle noise. Because Title 14's general penalty clause in § 14-3-1 governs unless a section states otherwise, driving or parking in a bicycle lane in violation of § 14-10-9 is punishable as an infraction.
