Greenwich, CT Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Section 6B-6(a) of the Code of Ordinances bars operating construction, drilling or demolition tools and equipment between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following day on weekdays, before 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and at any time on Sundays or legal holidays, whenever the resulting sound exceeds the property-line limits fixed in § 6B-5. That prohibition does not reach domestic power tools, which are governed separately under § 6B-6(e). Section 6B-8(c) then carves out a special exemption: noise generated by construction activities between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays is exempt from the chapter altogether, meaning ordinary daytime construction sound does not have to stay under the § 6B-5 decibel table during those windows.

Outside those exempt hours, and always on Sundays and holidays, construction sound is measured against the same zone-based decibel ceilings that apply to any other noise source: up to 55 dBA into a residential receptor by day and 45 dBA at night, or 62 dBA between business properties. The Board of Selectmen may grant a variance from the construction-hours rule under § 6B-9 where it finds an overriding public-safety, health or welfare interest, after a public hearing held within 30 days of the application and written notice mailed to the applicant at least ten business days beforehand.
