Mountain View, CA Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Sec. , Monday through Friday, and bars all work on Saturdays, Sundays and recognized holidays unless the chief building official gives prior written approval. The section defines "construction activity" broadly to include any physical activity on the site or in the staging area, including delivery of materials, so early-morning truck deliveries count the same as hammering or sawing. Subsection (b) lets the chief building official modify the permitted hours at any time, before or during a project, on 24 hours' written notice to the contractor, applicant, developer or owner, and that modification can tighten the hours as easily as it can extend them or add weekend days.

A contractor, owner or applicant must produce any written order or permit for modified hours immediately on request from a member of the public, public safety personnel or city staff. Subsection (c) allows work at any hour, any day, during an emergency, but requires the emergency to be completed as fast as feasible and, if it happens outside normal hours, reported to the Mountain View Police Department and the community development department's building division by the next business day. Subsection (d) requires a posted sign at every construction vehicle entrance listing the project manager's contact information, the contractor's name, state license number and phone number, and an after-hours emergency contact for life-safety response.
