Leaf blowers, lawn mowers and similar domestic power equipment are exempt from the noise limits when used between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. any day of the week. Outside those hours they must not violate the general noise prohibition.
Section 14-176(g) exempts 'use of domestic power equipment (including, but not limited to, power lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, snowblowers, tillers, saws, sanders, drills or similar devices) between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. any day of the week.' The exemption is a time window, not a ban: outside 7 a.m.–9 p.m., equipment use is not automatically exempt and can be cited under the general prohibition (Sec. 14-172). Madison sets no decibel cap for leaf blowers.
Use outside 7 a.m.–9 p.m. that unreasonably disturbs neighbors can be cited under Sec. 14-172: minimum $100, then $250, then $500 plus 24 hours jail.
