Lakeville, MN Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Lakeville addresses vehicle noise through two parts of the City Code. Under City Code 4-1-4, as summarized on the City's Common Code Requirements page, disturbance from vehicles such as revving engine noise, squealing tires, and loud exhaust pipes, or any other noise audible within 50 feet of the source, is considered a nuisance and a violation. Separately, the overnight provisions of 4-1-4 prohibit the repair and servicing of motor vehicles, recreational vehicles, or other equipment between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. The amplified-sound section, City Code 4-1-4-1, adds a specific vehicle rule: a sound-producing device operated in a motor vehicle so that it is plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet from the vehicle is prima facie evidence of a violation at any time of day. The City does not publish a numeric decibel limit for exhaust or engine noise; the 50-foot audibility test governs.
