Gaithersburg City Code Chapter 14, Section 14-17 addresses the removal and impoundment of abandoned vehicles. Under Maryland Transportation Article 25-201, an abandoned vehicle is defined as any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer that is inoperable and left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours, has remained illegally on public property for more than 48 hours, or has remained on private property without the consent of the property owner for more than 48 hours. Gaithersburg police may tag suspected abandoned vehicles and arrange for towing after the required notice period. Inoperable vehicles on residential property (those without current registration, missing major components, or otherwise incapable of being driven) may also be subject to code enforcement action. Owners of impounded vehicles must pay towing and storage fees to reclaim them.
