Gaithersburg electrical codes require new residential garages and carports accessory to one- or two-family dwellings and townhouses to include rough-in wiring for Level 2 (240-volt) EV charging receptacles. Violators face a fine of up to $100. EV charging spaces must display signage indicating the space is for EV charging only, any time restrictions, the maximum fine amount, and must comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. EV charging spaces count toward minimum parking requirements under zoning and parking laws. Montgomery County also offers residential EV charging station permits through the Department of Permitting Services.
