Federal Way, WA Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

050 sets out exactly how a designated fire lane must be marked in Federal Way. Where the fire lane has a vertical curb at least six inches high, the curb's top and side must be painted yellow along the full length of the lane, and the adjacent pavement must carry block lettering at least 18 inches tall, with a three-inch brush stroke, reading 'No Parking - Fire Lane,' spaced no more than 50 feet apart. Where the curb is rolled or there is no curb at all, the code substitutes a yellow stripe at least six inches wide running the length of the lane, again paired with the same 18-inch lettering every 50 feet.

The chapter also allows reflective fire lane signs, in red letters on a white background, at least 12 by 18 inches, mounted four to six feet above ground and spaced no more than 50 feet apart, as an alternative or supplement to painted markings; the fire chief can approve mounting a sign on a building instead of a post. 090 puts the cost of maintaining the paint and signage on the property owner. 100 further requires a posted notice at each property entrance stating that vehicles parked in fire lanes may be impounded, along with the towing company's name, phone number and address. These sections date to Ordinance No. 90-61, adopted June 5, 1990, and are carried forward as Code 2001 sections 15-111 through 15-121.
