Cicero, IL Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 22-11 requires driveways connecting to a garage to be built with four inches of compacted gravel topped with five inches of concrete or asphalt reinforced with wire mesh, to be at least eight and a half feet wide, and to allow two and a half feet of clearance for an adjoining walkway. Driveways must be set back from the property line by at least four inches, and garages must sit back at least three feet from the property line unless the Town of Cicero Zoning Code provides otherwise.

Parking pads carry their own specs: a minimum width of eight and one-half feet, a maximum depth of 20 feet, and a required two and one-half foot walkway. Permanent bollards or a fence must stand immediately behind a parking pad to keep vehicles from driving off the pad into an adjoining yard, except where the pad sits directly in front of a garage. Any parking pad built after the section's effective date without a valid building permit, or that fails to meet these specifications, must be removed or brought into compliance through the normal permitting process.

Pads installed before the effective date are grandfathered until repaired, replaced, sold with the property, or found to violate another code provision. The Building Commissioner may grant a variance from these specifications for exceptional lot conditions, but only after a written application to the legal department and certified-mail notice to all contiguous and directly opposite property owners, who then have two weeks to comment.
