Redlands requires vehicles on residential property to be parked entirely on a permanent paved surface such as asphalt or concrete, not on a front lawn or unpaved dirt. Vehicles also may not block or partially block a sidewalk or driveway, and front-yard storage of trailers, campers and boats is prohibited without a permit.
The City of Redlands prohibits front-lawn and unpaved parking on residential property. Per the Traffic Safety Unit, all vehicles must be parked on a permanent paved surface such as asphalt, Portland cement concrete, or other approved stabilized permanent surface, and the entire vehicle must be on the paved surface, not just the tires. Parking on the front lawn or bare dirt is prohibited entirely and is enforced by Code Enforcement. Vehicles must also be parked so they do not block or partially block a sidewalk or driveway. For larger items, RMC 18.164.130 prohibits parking or storing detached campers, trailers and boats in a driveway or front-yard area unless the resident obtains a minor exception permit for a city-approved hard-surfaced area; a resident-owned motor home is exempt but may not overhang into the public right-of-way. Blocking a public sidewalk or a driveway with a parked vehicle also runs afoul of California Vehicle Code 22500, which prohibits stopping or parking in front of a public or private driveway or on a sidewalk. Together, the city's paved-surface requirement and the state sidewalk/driveway rules govern how residents may park on and around their own driveways.
Parking on a front lawn, dirt, gravel or any non-paved surface is a code violation. Blocking or partially blocking a sidewalk or driveway can be cited under city rules and California Vehicle Code 22500. Storing trailers, campers or boats in the front yard or driveway without a minor exception permit violates RMC 18.164.130.
