Unincorporated Shelby County has no blanket overnight-parking ban, but Section 24-191(a) caps parking on any residential street at 24 consecutive hours, and any vehicle stored more than 30 days in a lot or garage must be reported to the sheriff's department.
Shelby County Code Section 24-191(a) sets the operative overnight limit: no vehicle may be parked on any residential street longer than 24 consecutive hours, preventing repeated multi-night street storage without moving the vehicle. There is no separate ordinance banning ordinary overnight passenger-car parking on county roads beyond that rule. Section 24-24 requires that whenever a motor vehicle is stored in a garage, trailer park or court, or parking lot for more than 30 consecutive days, the facility operator must report its description to the sheriff's department. Section 24-189 requires unattended vehicles to have the engine stopped, ignition locked, key removed, and brake set. Memphis and the suburbs set their own overnight rules.
A vehicle left on a residential street beyond 24 hours may be ticketed and, if obstructing traffic, impounded under Section 24-199. Failing to file the Section 24-24 stored-vehicle report forfeits storage claims and brings a fine of at least $10.
