In unincorporated Shelby County, no vehicle may be parked on a residential street for more than 24 consecutive hours, and Chapter 24, Article V bars parking within 12 inches of the curb, in front of driveways, within 15 feet of a hydrant, and other specified locations.
Shelby County Code Section 24-191(a) makes it unlawful to park, or knowingly permit the parking of, any vehicle on any residential street longer than 24 consecutive hours. Section 24-184 lists places where stopping, standing, or parking is prohibited, including on a sidewalk, more than 12 inches from the curb, in front of a public or private driveway, within an intersection, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, on a crosswalk, and anywhere official signs prohibit parking. Section 24-190 bars stopping with the left side to the curb, and Section 24-186 forbids parking to display a vehicle for sale or to wash, grease, or repair it. Memphis and the suburbs enforce their own on-street ordinances.
An officer may cite a violating vehicle to answer within 15 days (Sec. 24-197). The sheriff may impound a vehicle obstructing traffic under Section 24-199, at $60 tow plus $7 daily. The registered owner is presumed responsible.
