Gilbert, AZ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Section 62-76, adopted by Ordinance No. 2662 in May 2018, authorizes the town manager to convert publicly owned parking lots or garages, or defined portions of them, into permit parking zones. Once official signs are posted specifying the hours or days a permit or decal is required, only vehicles displaying a current and valid permit or decal issued by the town manager or the manager's designee may park in that area; every other vehicle is prohibited from parking there during those posted hours. A vehicle that does have a permit must still display it properly, in a conspicuous location, in accordance with the section and any accompanying town rules.

Unlike a residential preferential-parking-district scheme found in some cities, Gilbert's permit-zone authority under § 62-76 is scoped to town-owned lots and garages rather than public residential streets; there is no separate general-code section establishing resident-only parking permits on residential blocks. The town manager's designation and the posted signage are what create the restriction, and enforcement follows the same Chapter 62 framework as the rest of Article III: the registered owner is presumptively liable under § 62-66, and a vehicle parked in an unauthorized zone may be relocated at the owner's expense under § 62-67(b).
