New Haven, CT Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Under section 29-55, if a majority of residents on a block petition the board of aldermen, the board may designate that block a residential parking zone. Once signs are posted, no one may park along the curb there without a permit displayed in plain view, issued by the department of traffic and parking. Residents receive a permanent decal for their own vehicle plus visitor permits and short special-event permits for guests. No decal is issued until current and back taxes and any parking fines on the vehicle are paid, and misuse, selling, transferring, or altering a decal, is punishable by up to $100 per violation.
