Fresno Municipal Code section 14-1006 prohibits storing any vehicle on a city street for longer than 72 consecutive hours, regardless of whether a sign is posted. The Parking Division and the Fresno Police Department both enforce the limit, chalking tires and leaving a notice before towing under the California Vehicle Code.
On-street parking in Fresno is governed by Chapter 14 (Vehicles and Traffic), Article 10 of the Fresno Municipal Code, together with the California Vehicle Code. Under FMC 14-1006 (Use of Streets for Storage of Vehicles Prohibited), a vehicle may not remain parked on a public street for more than 72 consecutive hours. The city's Parking Division explains that this applies 'regardless of whether or not there is any sign posted,' and that parking in front of your own home does not exempt you. When a 72-hour complaint is investigated, parking staff chalk the tires and leave a notice; the owner must then drive the vehicle at least 1/10th of a mile or move it to confirm it is operable and not being 'stored' on the street. Both the Parking Division and the Fresno Police Department enforce the 72-hour regulation, and removal is authorized statewide by California Vehicle Code section 22651(k) when a vehicle is left on a highway 72 or more consecutive hours in violation of a local ordinance.
Vehicles that remain in place beyond 72 hours may be cited and towed under FMC 14-1006 and California Vehicle Code section 22651(k). The Parking Division marks tires with chalk and leaves a 72-hour (or 24-hour, depending on the violation) notice before enforcement. Owners may call the Parking Division at (559) 621-PARK (7275) to request an extension, but the office cannot grant an extension if the Fresno Police Department issued the original notice.
