Yuba City, CA Public Conduct: Jaywalking (2026)

Yuba City's traffic code addresses pedestrian crossings in Article 16 of Chapter 9, Title 4 of the Yuba City Municipal Code, adopted by Ordinance 911, effective October 7, 1982. 1601 sets the baseline: where no crosswalk or traffic control device marks a preferred path, a pedestrian must cross a roadway at right angles to the curb or by the shortest route to the opposite curb, not diagonally or at an angle that lingers in traffic lanes. 1602 goes further in two specific zones. Inside the central traffic district, a pedestrian may not cross a roadway anywhere except in a marked crosswalk, no right-angle option applies there.

The same absolute crosswalk requirement applies on any street the City has designated as a through street, a category the Public Works Director maintains for higher-volume roadways. 1603 gives the Public Works Director authority to establish, mark and maintain crosswalks at intersections and other locations where pedestrian danger warrants it, so the boundaries of the central traffic district and the list of through streets are set administratively. A pedestrian who crosses outside a crosswalk in either zone, or who fails to take the shortest right-angle route elsewhere, commits a Yuba City Police Department-enforced infraction.

02, a first violation draws a fine up to $100, a second violation of the same provision within one year up to $200, and each additional violation within that year up to $500, with each day of a continuing violation treated as a separate offense.
