Pontiac, MI Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 114-22, carried over unchanged from the 1985 Code (former § 26-56), tells anyone "upon roller skates or riding in or by means of any coaster, toy vehicle, or similar device" to stay off the roadway. It does not name skateboards, but its "toy vehicle, or similar device" language is the catch-all a skateboard falls under. There are exactly two carve-outs: crossing a street at a marked crosswalk, and riding on a street the chief of police has designated a "play street." Section 114-15 defines that second exception: once authorized signs go up marking a play street, "no person shall drive a vehicle upon any such street or portion thereof except drivers of vehicles having business or whose residences are within such closed area," which is what clears the roadway for skaters and similar riders in the first place.

Chapter 114, Article I's own penalty clause at § 114-4 governs a § 114-22 violation because no fine is written into the section itself: if the Michigan Vehicle Code treats the act as a civil infraction, the fine is capped at $100.00 plus costs under MVC § 907; any other violation of this chapter carries a fine up to $500.00, up to 90 days' imprisonment, or both. Because § 114-22 sits in Article I (In General) rather than the repealed Article IX (Bicycles, §§ 114-361-114-381, struck by Ord.

No. 2234 in 2012), it survived that repeal and is the only Pontiac roadway rule reaching skateboards, coasters and roller skates directly; sidewalk and business-district skateboarding are otherwise left to general nuisance provisions rather than a skate-specific rule.
