The Plano City Council passed citizen-proposed STR regulations on April 22, 2024, effectively banning new short-term rentals in single-family residential areas. Pre-existing STRs that operated before the temporary ban may continue but must register with the city. The registration process requires an application, $300 fee (reduced to $100 with compliance/educational incentives), and responsible party contact information. The August 1, 2024 deadline applied to existing operators. Heritage districts impose a 300-foot minimum distance between STR properties. Approximately 212 applications were received before the deadline out of an estimated 345-700 STR properties citywide. Enforcement is handled by Plano Neighborhood Services with support from Deckard, the city's contracted compliance company.
Operating without registration is a violation. Every incident after August 1, 2024 is documented. HOAs may impose additional restrictions.
