Huntington, NY Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Section 198-93 lists prohibited signs "in all Districts," and subsection (B) names "Billboard and sandwich signs" outright, alongside (A) flashing and movable-copy signs, (F) off-premises advertising signs "unless otherwise provided," (H) animated signs "strictly prohibited," and (S) any sign with moving parts, whether mechanical or otherwise. There is no permit path around subsection (B): a billboard, static or digital, cannot be sited anywhere in the Town outside its incorporated villages. The one exception for changeable digital copy sits in § 198-92(B)(6), which exempts a single on-premises changeable-copy message board not exceeding twenty square feet from the sign-permit requirement, provided the owner submits an underwriter's certificate or electrical certification before the Town schedules an inspection.

Only one such board is allowed per premises, and every electronic message board must also comply with Chapter 143, the Town's separate electrical code. Drive-through menu and pre-menu boards get their own narrower allowance elsewhere in § 198-92(B)(7), capped at thirty-two and sixteen square feet respectively, but those are not general-purpose advertising displays. Because § 198-93 treats a billboard as banned regardless of its illumination technology, an LED or digital billboard face is not a workaround to the ban; the size and illumination rules in §§ 198-92 and 198-95 govern only the smaller on-premises message boards the code does permit.
