Jackson, MS Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 102-33(k)(1) of the General Code's sign article sets the interstate-specific dimensional table for outdoor advertising signs. On all federal interstate highways as designated by the Federal Highway Administration, signs on the same side of the highway must sit at least 1,000 feet apart, a distance that jumps to 2,500 feet for digital electronic signs facing the same direction on a continuous thoroughfare. The maximum sign size on interstate and frontage roads is capped at 700 square feet with a maximum height of 50 feet from ground level, larger than the 400-square-foot, 35-foot cap the same subsection sets for signs on other city streets and highways.

These interstate-facing signs are further confined by Section 102-33(k)(5) to C-3 general commercial, I-1 light industrial and I-2 heavy industrial zoning districts, and must sit at least 300 feet from residentially zoned property fronting the same street. Section 102-33(k)(4) adds a 15-foot minimum setback from any public right-of-way, extending to 25 feet from a rear lot line that abuts residential zoning. Section 102-33(k)(9) further freezes the citywide inventory of outdoor advertising faces at the number existing as of June 1, 2007, so a new interstate-facing sign can be built only after removing two existing faces from the city's permitted inventory.
